R – Reference Verse

Acts 5:38-39 (NASB)

38 *"So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown; 39 but if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God.”

E – Entry Point (Modern-day importance)

Have you ever looked around today and noticed how many different churches and religious groups exist? It can be very confusing. Many of them are built around a famous founder, focus purely on entertaining the crowd, and teach heavily on the principles and traditions of men instead of the pure teachings of the Scripture. It makes you wonder: which one will really last?

Today’s text gives us a very clear answer and shows us the absolute importance of belonging to the local church that is actually identified in the Bible—the one established by Christ Himself, not a church built by men. When we really understand Acts 5:39, all our spiritual anxiety disappears. We realize that any religious group, doctrine, or plan built by human beings will eventually fail and be overthrown. But the Lord's true church is an unstoppable force. If God is the builder, no amount of human opposition or changing culture can ever tear it down.

C – Context (Historical and Scriptural Background)

After being miraculously released from prison by an angel, the apostles went straight back to the temple to preach. The temple guards arrested them again and brought them before the Sanhedrin. The high priest was furious because the apostles were filling all of Jerusalem with the teachings of Jesus, directly defying their strict orders. Apostle Peter confidently responded, "We must obey God rather than men." This made the leaders so angry that they wanted to execute the apostles right then and there. But then, a very highly respected Pharisee and law teacher named Gamaliel stood up. He calmed the angry room with a brief history lesson. He reminded them of past rebels—like Theudas and Judas of Galilee—who claimed to be somebody great but ended up dead, and their movements completely vanished. Gamaliel’s advice was simple but brilliant: Leave the apostles alone. If this is just another fake human movement, it will naturally die. But if this is truly from God, trying to stop it will make you an enemy of God Himself.

H – Honor (Celebrating Truth Seekers)

Today, I want to honor the senior members and the steadfast "older brothers and sisters" of this congregation. Many of you have been Christians for decades. You have seen trends come and go. You have seen times when the church faced fierce persecution, financial hardships, or painful internal conflicts.

Yet, you never panicked. You didn't abandon ship when things got tough. You quietly and faithfully trusted that this is the Lord's church, and the Lord will take care of it. Your steady, calm faith is a huge encouragement to the younger generation. You are living proof of Gamaliel’s statement: the church has survived all these years simply because it is from God.

A – Admonish (A Call to the Errant)

At the same time, we need to correct our modern tendency to act like God is losing control. Sometimes, we act like we need to "save" God's reputation. We get into ugly, angry arguments in Facebook comment sections defending the Bible, losing our Christian character just to win a debate. Or, when a problem hits the church, we get deeply discouraged and threaten to leave the faith (not the local church, but the faith in Jesus Christ).

We need to stop acting like God is weak! God does not need us to defend Him with toxic anger, and He certainly doesn't want us living in fear of the culture. When we panic, we are basically saying we don't believe God is powerful enough to protect His own truth. Let us stop worrying and start trusting in His unstoppable plan.

R – Reteach (Key Points)

1. The Ultimate Allegiance (v. 29)

"But Peter and the apostles answered, 'We must obey God rather than men.'" When forced to choose, Peter's answer was automatic. The Greek word for obey here is Peitharcheō, which means to submit to a higher authority or to obey a ruler absolutely. Apostle Peter wasn't just being rebellious; he was recognizing who the true Boss was - God.

2. The Fragility of Human Plans (v. 38)

"...for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown." Gamaliel stated a universal truth. The Greek word for overthrown is Kataluō, which means to be torn down, destroyed, or come to nothing. Every human philosophy, every popular sinful trend, and every false religion eventually experiences kataluō. It falls apart because it has no divine foundation.

3. The Unstoppable Power of God (v. 39a)

"...but if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them." The religious leaders had money, political power, and prison cells, but Gamaliel warned them they lacked the power to stop the Gospel. The Greek word here is Dunamai (the root of dynamite), meaning ability or power. No human has the dunamai to stop God's will.

4. The Danger of Fighting God (v. 39b)

"...or else you may even be found fighting against God." This is the scariest phrase in the chapter. The Greek word used here is incredibly rare: Theomachos. It literally translates to a "God-fighter." Gamaliel warned the Sanhedrin that if they kept pushing their own agenda against the truth, they wouldn't just be fighting fishermen; they would be stepping into the ring with the Almighty God.

G – Generalize

The survival of the church of Christ for over 2,000 years is the greatest proof that Gamaliel was right. The Lord's true church has always been standing ever since it was built by Jesus Christ. Though it suffered severe division and fierce persecution, the church still stands until today. Think about it: the powerful Roman Empire that executed Paul is gone. The Sanhedrin that threatened Peter is gone. Dictators and regimes throughout history have tried to burn the Bible and wipe out Christianity, and they have all failed and turned to dust. Yet, here we are today—not just in Butuan City, but all over the world—still singing the same praises, reading the same Word, and serving the same Jesus. If it is from God, it cannot be stopped!

E – Encourage (The Final Charge)

Brothers and sisters, leave your spiritual anxiety at the door today. Walk out of this building with your head held high! We are not on the losing team; we are on the winning side of history. Keep doing the work of the Lord with absolute confidence. Speak the truth boldly, love your neighbors deeply, and trust that the unstoppable God is backing you up every step of the way!

Soli deo Gloria!
