“‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.’” — Acts 2:17
E-Entry Point: The Importance for Today’s Christian
In our lives today, we often feel completely exhausted. Between the daily pressure of our jobs, the long hours spent in traffic, and the rising costs of living, many Christians feel like they are running on empty. We are people of deep faith, but even the strongest person can feel weak when life becomes too heavy. This passage, specifically verses 17 through 21, is not just a history lesson; it is the blueprint for our spiritual "recharge." As members of the Lord's church, we look back to this moment in Acts 2 as our beginning. It reminds us that we are living in the "last days"—a time of grace where the power of The Lord Jesus Christ is available to everyone who seeks Him.
C-Context: The Time of Writing
The scene takes place in Jerusalem during Pentecost, fifty days after The Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. The disciples, who were once afraid and hiding, are now standing in the middle of a massive crowd. People from many different nations have gathered, confused by the sound of wind and the sight of flames. Apostle Peter stands up with the other apostles to explain that this is not chaos, but fulfillment. He quotes the Prophet Joel to show that the new age has arrived. They were moving away from the Old Law of Moses to the Law of Liberty in The Lord Jesus Christ. Apostle Peter is showing that the miracles happening before their eyes are proof that God is finally bringing His kingdom to the earth through His Son.
H-Honor: Celebrating the Seekers
Before we continue, we want to honor those of you who are the quiet pillars of this church. We honor the parents who wake up early to pray for their families; the workers who choose to be honest even when it is difficult; and the students who spend their free time studying the Bible. We see those of you who search the Scriptures every day, asking, "What does The Lord Jesus Christ want me to do?" In verse 17, the Prophet Joel mentions young men and old men alike—this means God values every generation in this room. Your commitment to the truth and your hunger for God are what keep this church strong. You are a light to everyone around you.
A-Admonish: A Call to the Errant
However, we must also speak to those whose hearts have grown cold or have drifted away from the Bible's teachings. Verse 20 warns us that "the great and glorious day of the Lord" is coming. We warn those who live as if that day will never arrive. If you are a "Sunday-only" Christian who forgets The Lord Jesus Christ from Monday to Saturday, it is time to wake up. We cannot claim to be part of the body of The Lord Jesus Christ while ignoring the urgency of the Gospel. Do not settle for a shallow religion when God is warning us that time is short. We must live every day as if we are truly in the "last days" described by the Prophet Joel.
R-Reteach: Three Key Points
1. The Empowerment for All (Greek: Pāsa Sarx)
In verse 17, Apostle Peter says God will pour out His Spirit on "all people" (pāsa sarx—literally "all flesh").
Application: In the Old Testament, the Spirit was usually for specific leaders or prophets. But now, in the kingdom of The Lord Jesus Christ, the promise is for everyone—sons, daughters, young, and old. No matter your social status or age, you have a place in God's work.
Cross-Reference: Galatians 3:28 — "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in The Lord Jesus Christ."
2. The Clarity of the Signs (Greek: Teras)
In verse 19, God promises to show "wonders" (teras) and signs. In the original language, a teras is something so unusual it causes the observer to marvel and wonder.
Application: These signs were meant to grab the world's attention and point them to the truth of The Lord Jesus Christ. Today, while we no longer look for new signs, we look at the recorded signs in the Bible to confirm our faith. These wonders remind us that God is much bigger than our daily problems. If God can darken the sun and turn the moon to blood, He can certainly handle your challenges.
3. The Path to Salvation (Greek: Epikaleomai)
The climax of this section is verse 21: "Everyone who calls on (epikaleomai) the name of the Lord will be saved." To "call on" means more than just saying His name; it means to appeal to the authority of The Lord Jesus Christ and obey His terms.
Application: How did the people on that day "call on the name of the Lord"? When they asked what to do, Apostle Peter told them in verse 38 to repent and be baptized. Calling on the name of The Lord Jesus Christ is an act of obedient faith. It is the only way to be "recharged" and rescued from the darkness of this world.
G-Generalize
What does this mean for us? It means the Church of Christ is a place of universal hope. Verses 17-21 show us that God’s plan is not a secret for a few, but a shout to the whole world. Whether in the first century or today in the Philippines, the message is the same: God has poured out His grace through the words of the Prophet Joel, the signs have been given as Apostle Peter explained, and the door to salvation is open to anyone willing to call on The Lord Jesus Christ through obedience.
E-Encourage: The Final Charge
Brothers and sisters, be encouraged! You are living in the age of fulfillment. You are part of the "all people" that the Prophet Joel and Apostle Peter spoke about.
Do not give up on your family; the promise of The Lord Jesus Christ is for them too.
Do not give up when the world seems dark; remember the "wonders" of God.
Do not give up on your salvation; The Lord Jesus Christ is ready to save all who call on Him.
Lift up your heads. You are living in the last and greatest days of God’s plan. You are recharged by the promise that everyone who seeks The Lord Jesus Christ will find Him. Let us walk together in the light of the "great and glorious day" to come. Amen!
