Theme: Authority, Responsibility, and Accountability in Acts 1:8
Target: Local Church of Christ, Butuan City
Framework: RECHARGE
Acts 1:8 (NKJV): "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
We stand at the threshold of 2026. A "New Year" is a hollow phrase if it only marks the passage of time. To have a year that is truly new, we must do something we have never done before. If we carry the same habits, the same silence, and the same hesitation into 2026, it will not be a new year; it will simply be "Another Same as Usual Year" To recharge is to change the input so that the output is transformed.
The Early Church: The Apostles were in a "waiting room" in Jerusalem. They were small, uneducated, and under the shadow of the Roman Empire. Yet, Acts 1:8 turned their waiting into witnessing.
Butuan City 2026: We are in a city of history—the "First Easter Mass" site, a hub of the Agusan Valley. But history cannot save souls. While Butuan grows with new malls and infrastructure, the spiritual "Jerusalem" of our immediate neighborhoods—the surrounding purok in Taligaman—remains hungry for the primitive Gospel. The mission hasn't changed; only the map has.
Before we look forward, we look at you. I want to honor this congregation. You are here because of your devotion to Jesus Christ, the Chief Shepherd. You have not gathered to follow a human pastor, a "reverend," or a personality. In the Churches of Christ, we honor the "priesthood of all believers" (1 Peter 2:9). Your loyalty to the Word and your sacrifice to keep this local body moving is a sweet aroma to God.
However, we must speak truth: Many of us have treated the "Great Commission" as the "Great Suggestion." We have settled for Minimum Action. We attend service, we sing, we commune, and then we go silent.
If we were the only "Bible" our neighbors in the puroks of Taligaman ever read, would they know Christ?
To have No Action is to deny the power promised in Acts 1:8. A church that does not evangelize will eventually fossilize.
Greek Point: Exousia (Authority/Right) vs. Dunamis (Power/Ability). In Acts 1:8, Jesus promises Dunamis. This is inherent power.
Teaching: We don't go because we feel "qualified"; we go because we are "empowered."
Cross Reference: Matthew 28:18-19 – "All authority has been given to Me... Go therefore..."
Greek Point: Martys (Witness). This is where we get the word "martyr." A witness is one who testifies to what they have seen and heard.
Teaching: You are not called to be a "lawyer" (to argue the case) but a "witness" (to tell your story of salvation). This applies to every Christian, not just the Apostles.
Cross Reference: 1 Peter 3:15 – "...always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you."
Greek Point: Eschatos (End/Uttermost). The mission has a destination: the end of the earth.
Teaching: We are accountable for our "concentric circles." Our Jerusalem (family and the puroks in Taligaman), our Judea (Butuan City), our Samaria (those we dislike or find "different"), and the world.
Cross Reference: Ezekiel 33:8 – If we do not warn the wicked, their blood is required at our hand.
Acts 1:8 is the blueprint for a living church. It proves that the Holy Spirit was not given for our comfort, but for our commission. Whether you are an Apostle in the first century or a Christian in Butuan City in 2026, the mandate is the same: Receive, Go, Tell. We are the link in a chain that stretches back to more than 2,000 years. If the chain breaks with us, we have failed our purpose.
As we step into 2026, be encouraged! God does not call the equipped; He equips the called. I believe that as this local church commits to Acts 1:8, Butuan City will see a revival of the New Testament pattern. God will bless your businesses, your families, and your health—not for your sake alone, but so that you can be a better witness for Him. 2026 is the year this church moves from the "upper room" to the "open streets." Let’s get to work.
All Glory Belongs to God!
