We live in an age of constant change. Every day, new theories are proposed, new scientific models are published, and old paradigms are overturned. For many, this relentless wave of shifting opinions and evolving facts can feel disorienting. If the world is constantly changing its mind about how the universe works, where do we find our solid ground?
The answer lies in understanding the difference between the reason things exist and the mechanics of how they operate. We can anchor our lives on this single guiding post:
"Faith in God provides us the unshakable reason for everything. Human discoveries keep evolving to try to understand how things happen."
When we embrace this truth, we no longer need to be swayed to and fro by the waves of human theories. We can find perfect peace by separating the eternal "Why" from the ever-changing "How."
Long before humanity had telescopes or laboratories, God established the purpose and order of the universe. He is the beginning and the end. As the Scriptures remind us, God is the author and creator of life itself: "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible..." (Colossians 1:16).
Because God is the author, He alone provides the meaning behind the story. Human science cannot put a universe into a test tube and extract its "purpose." That is the realm of faith. And as Hebrews 11:1 tells us, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Our faith is not a blind leap into the dark; it is the substance that grounds us. It tells us that we are not random accidents, but intentional creations.
Ultimately, knowing the Creator leads us to our highest calling: worshipping Him. Recognizing God's sovereign hand over everything reveals that worshipping God and enjoying Him forever is the ultimate purpose of man. "Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made" (Isaiah 43:7).
If faith gives us the unshakable reason, then human discovery is our ongoing, imperfect attempt to understand the mechanics. Science is a beautiful tool, but it is inherently limited. It is designed to change, to update, and to evolve as we learn more.
We should not be alarmed when scientific opinions shift, because the Bible already tells us that human comprehension has its boundaries. King Solomon, in all his wisdom, observed the limits of human discovery: "Then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it" (Ecclesiastes 8:17).
Furthermore, we must humbly accept that some mechanics of the universe are simply beyond our current grasp. As Deuteronomy 29:29 states, "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever." Human discovery will keep evolving, but it will always be a step behind the infinite mind of God.
Applying this guiding post means learning how we can stand firmly on God’s Word while navigating the ever-shifting landscape of modern society. Here is how we balance our unshakable truth against the changing trends of men in practical areas of our lives:
1. How We Approach Our Children's Development
Secular psychology constantly introduces to us new parenting trends, developmental theories, and behavioral philosophies. While we can glean helpful, practical insights into a child's cognitive growth (the "how"), we must be cautious not to adopt societal trends that contradict biblical discipline and instruction. We hold to the unshakable truth that our children are entrusted to us by God, and our primary goal is to anchor their identity in Him.
Our Unshakable Truth: "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6)
2. How We Guide Our Youth in Relationships
Modern culture heavily dictates how our youth view dating, friendships, and identity, often promoting fleeting connections, self-centric morality, and redefining boundaries. While we might look to human behavioral studies to understand social dynamics, we know our young people must be guided by God's unchanging standards for purity and purpose. We must guide our youth to resist the pressure to conform to modern relational trends and instead anchor themselves in biblical love.
Our Unshakable Truth: "Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart." (2 Timothy 2:22)
3. How We Approach Studies and Academic Pursuits
Secular academia is constantly shifting, often promoting new philosophies, ideologies, and worldviews that challenge biblical authority. While we value education and vigorously engage in the pursuit of human knowledge (the "how"), we must be cautious not to let popular secular philosophies dismantle our faith. We hold to the unshakable truth that all true wisdom and knowledge ultimately point back to the Creator. We encourage rigorous study, but we filter every academic theory through the lens of God's Word.
Our Unshakable Truth: "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ." (Colossians 2:8)
4. How We Navigate Our Career Paths
The modern workplace drives us with shifting economic trends, the "hustle culture," and the pursuit of status. While we adapt to new technologies and career strategies as a practical necessity, we remember that our unshakable reason for working is to glorify God and serve others. We view our careers as platforms for ministry, not the ultimate source of our worth. We are cautious not to let corporate ambitions eclipse our divine calling.
Our Unshakable Truth: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." (Colossians 3:23)
5. How We Build Our Christian Marriages and Homes
Societal definitions of marriage and family are constantly changing around us, often reducing the marriage covenant to a temporary contract based on emotional convenience. While we can utilize sociological insights into communication or conflict resolution, we firmly reject cultural shifts that undermine the biblical structure of the home. We build upon the unshakable truth that our marriages are sacred, lifelong covenants designed by God to reflect Christ’s love for the Church.
Our Unshakable Truth: "Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." (Mark 10:9)
6. How We Lead the Church and Fulfill the Great Commission
In our effort to reach the world, it can be tempting for us as a church to rely solely on modern marketing trends, sociological algorithms, or entertainment models. While we can wisely utilize new human discoveries and technologies to spread the Word, we ensure the message of the Gospel and the method of discipleship remain unshakable. We are cautious never to dilute the truth of Scripture in an attempt to make it culturally palatable.
Our Unshakable Truth: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19-20)
When we understand this balance, we are set free. We do not have to fear new scientific discoveries or societal shifts, nor do we have to force the Bible to act as a scientific or sociological textbook. We can watch human knowledge evolve with curiosity, knowing that every new discovery is simply humanity uncovering another layer of how God's magnificent design operates.
But our ultimate trust is not placed in the temporary models of human science or culture. We do not place our hope in theories that will change tomorrow. Instead, we declare with the Psalmist: "Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him" (Psalm 62:5).
We walk through this world with stability because we know our ultimate destination is not tied to this temporary earth. "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ" (Philippians 3:20).
Let human discovery continue to evolve as it searches for the "how." But let our hearts remain perfectly at peace, anchored entirely to the Creator who has already given us the unshakable "why."
